Description

The Galibi Nature Reserve is in the North-East corner of Suriname in the district Marowijne. Two villages named Langamankondre and Christiaankondre are also part of the Galibi area. About 800 people live in these two villages and they are descendants of the Indigenous tribe called ‘Caribs’. These Caribs have settled in this area right after the abolition of slavery. Their main sources of income are agriculture and fishing as their ancestors have thought them. The traditional handicraft of the tribe seems to be preserved now with the introduction of tourism as another source of income.

Day 1.

Morning transfer by bus from Paramaribo to Albina, a village along the Marowijne River and forming the boarder with St. Laurent, French Guyana. The route takes us across the Wijdenbosch Bridge from where we have a magnificent view of Paramaribo.  A sightseeing tour through the former bauxite city Moengo is also included.

From Albina we continue north by boat to Galibi. The Myrysji Lodge where we will spend the night(s) is situated along the river in Christiaankondre, an Amerindian Village. After check in lunch is served. In the afternoon you can learn more about the local indigenous and their lifestyle because we will walk through the village. After the stroll through the village one can relax on the loungers on the beach or recline in the local bar. After dinner our guide will give instructions for the nightly trip to the sea turtle nesting beach.
